2/10/70 ~ ABC-TV
Dick’s guests are Noel Coward, Alfred Lunt, Lynn Fontanne, Tammy Grimes, and Brian Bedford. To honor Noel Coward on the occasion of his being knighted, Cavett interviewed not only "The Master" himself, but also his close friends, The Lunts. Tammy Grimes and Brian Bedford, who were appearing on Broadway at the time in a revival of Coward's classic play, Private Lives, performed a medley of Sir Noel's most popular songs. At one point during the interview, Cavett asked Coward, "What is the word for when one has terrific, prolific qualities?" Without missing a beat, Coward answered in a deadpan manner, "Talent", which sent Cavett and the audience into convulsions of laughter. Some generational loss. 1 hour, 11 minutes with commercials edited out. (Included as part of the “Lunts-A-Palooza” disc). A-

Stadlen, as Groucho, performs a monologue and sings “It’s Only A Shanty In Old Shanty Town”. Oddly, Shelley doesn’t sing anything from the show, but rather she sings a WWII song called “I Didn’t Raise My Son To Be A Soldier”, which she used to audition for the show. Despite all the hype and hope, the show lasted for just 80 performances on Broadway. 1 hour, complete with original commercials. Has producers counter numbers onscreen throughout. A

Ellsberg was charged under the Espionage Act of 1917 along with other charges of theft and conspiracy, carrying a total maximum sentence of 115 years. Dick’s only guests are John Lennon and Yoko Ono. John Lennon and Yoko Ono's two visits to The Dick Cavett Show stand out from their numerous television appearances as their most relaxed, in-depth interviews. Clearly they enjoyed being with Cavett. The September 11, 1971, show is notable as the first American television interview John gave after the breakup of The Beatles. So comfortable were the Lennons that after the show was over they continued talking with Cavett. The additional portions of that first interview were shown as part of The Dick Cavett Show on September 24, 1971. During that visit they'd discussed coming back and giving a live performance. True to their word, for their appearance on Cavett's show on May 11, 1972, they returned with Elephants Memory and each sang one song (see listing below). Commercials have been edited out. (Also included on the disc: The Dick Cavett Show, 9/24/71). A

The Dick Cavett Show VOLUME 58
9/16/71 ~ ABC-TV
Dick’s guests are Vida Blue, Bob Feller, Milt Kamen, and Robert Altman. Recorded from a Decades-TV rebroadcast. 90 minutes. A

The Dick Cavett Show VOLUME 59
9/24/71 ~ ABC-TV
Dicks guests include John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Stan Freburg. “Stan Freberg, longtime voice actor and ad man, spends his time complaining (comically?) about how he had previously been "bumped" from an appearance because of the Lennons. He also insists upon frequently interrupting the other in-studio guest, Robert Citron, Director of the Smithsonian Institute of Short-Lived Phenomena. The segments with Lennon and Yoko, culled from the 9/8/71 taping, include Yoko's explanation of "bagism," the infamous "Week in Bed," and a Q&A with the audience. Of particular note and curiosity, during the Q&A segment a fellow seated in the upper deck, longhaired and bearded and asking a question pertaining to peaceful vs. violent revolution, shockingly resembles the vagrant who wandered into Lennon's London estate believing John was speaking directly to him through his songs. (The confrontation between the two is captured in the documentary Imagine John Lennon). It has not yet been confirmed whether this is actually the same fellow”. Commercials have been edited out. (Also included on the disc: 9/11/71). A

The Dick Cavett Show VOLUME 60
10/8/71 ~ ABC-TV
Dick’s guests are Milton Berle, Dinah Shore, and Tuesday Weld. Recorded from a Decades-TV rebroadcast. 90 minutes. A

The Dick Cavett Show VOLUME 61
10/13/71 ~ ABC-TV
RARE! Dick welcomes guest Fred Astaire as the only guest for this episode. Fred at the time was reluctant to do talk shows, as he “didn’t like to talk about the past”. But he admitted he enjoyed speaking with Cavett on an earlier interview that aired in 1970, so he agreed to do this second interview. Fred sings “I Won’t Dance”, “Something’s Gotta Give”, “And One More For The Road”, and “Funny Face”, and “I’m Putting All My Eggs In One Basket”. He also attempts to teach Dick a dance. About an hour and 10 minutes, with commercials edited out. Some generational loss. B+

Reflecting on a 43 year career, Miss Davis comments on notables like Errol Flynn ("He thought I was a fool for working so hard") and Greta Garbo ("It's my dying ambition to meet her") and recites her favorite line: "I'd love to kiss you, but I just washed my hair." Recorded from a special rebroadcast airing on TCM in 2006. A

RARE! Airing as a special edition of The Dick Cavett Show on Thanksgiving night 1971, Dick Cavett devotes the entire episode of his show to Jim Henson and his Muppets. Throughout the interview, Jim introduces a variety of Muppet characters and talks about many aspects of the Muppets, including their construction and operation and their use on the educational program, Sesame Street. At points in the interview, Henson is joined by Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Caroll Spinney, Don Sahlin, and Kermit Love. The interview is interspersed with Muppet skits and clips from multiple Henson productions. 90 minutes, complete with original commercials. (This was only repeated once the following Thanksgiving, but the show was edited to just an hour at that time). A

Dicks guests are Shirley MacLaine, and John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Shirley MacLaine was on to promote the film “The Possession of Joel Delaney”. Its interesting to hear Shirley talk about the film’s subject matter –the occult and how she doesn’t believe in that stuff—but “a lot of people take it very seriously.” (This was obviously several years prior to her ‘Out on a Limb’ phase). Most of her conversation is about how she has been devoting most of her time and energy to campaigning to get a politician nominated to run for President. ABC did not want her to mention the name of the candidate which Dick and Shirley make fun of. They do wind up mentioning George McGovern’s name several times. Shirley stays on stage as John and Yoko are introduced. John Lennon discusses the deportation case against him and claims that his phone has been tapped by the FBI. Lennon's deportation case was eventually overturned by the New York Supreme Court in 1975. Commercials have been edited out. (Also included on the disc: The Dick Cavett Show, 7/9/73). A

Dick’s guests are Ray Charles, John Lindsay, and Dr. Samuel Rosen. This was Charles' last appearance on the show and it started, oddly enough, with a fire engine siren during Cavett's monologue (not the first time you can hear a fire truck during this set). Cavett's first interview is with then-New York City Mayor John Lindsey where they discuss, both seriously and in jest, the Nixon White House (this was shortly after the release of Nixon's infamous "Enemies List"). Charles performs "I Feel So Bad" and "Born To Lose" and the two slowly draw out some suspense before performing "Am I Blue" yet again. Charles resumes a previous discussion on the lack of sound quality on television programming, followed by a discussion with Dr. Samuel Rosen, who was responsible for a medical procedure that involved hearing restoration. The segment was a little cryptic for whatever reason. Charles asks some questions about hearing loss because unknown to many, Charles felt that he was losing his hearing, which was moderately surprising. Commercials have been edited out. Dick’s guest is Katherine Hepburn. Katherine was notorious for her unwillingness to grant interviews. When the Cavett Show contacted her to do an interview she agreed she’d come in and look around and check it out, but nothing was guaranteed. She came into the studio and checked out the lights, the cameras, the chairs, the temperature, she pronounced the carpet ugly and proceeded to find a table that was heavier and more suitable for her to put her feet up. Then she surprised everyone when she said they should just do the interview at that time. No one was in makeup, and there was no audience, but of course they jumped at the chance fearing she might change her mind and not come back. At the beginning is footage that she allowed to be showed when she didn’t even realize the cameras were rolling as she was checking the set out. Recorded from a Decades-TV rebroadcast. 90 minutes. A
