LIZA MINNELLI 1 DVD STANDING ROOM ONLY LONDON 3/20/86 90 minutes, pro shot, excellent picture. Liza In London, part of the Standing Room Only series, produced and directed by Don Mischer, and recorded on March 20th 1986 gets off to a really exciting start. Sure enough, Liza comes on singing ''New York, New York'' and gets her obligatory standing ovation. But this is merely a device, to presumably hook viewers at the outset. Rushing offstage into a dressing room, Miss Minnelli will now take us back to the beginning of the London Palladium show by means of a flashback. Wearing a short red and black sequined dress, she walks onto an empty stage singing ''Start All Over Again.'' As members of her band file in slowly, she expands the opening number to include ''Blue Skies'' and ''I'm So Excited'' In search of new material for her repertory, Liza devotes the first half of her concert to a mixture of contemporary hits and standards. "Old Friend" (Sondheim) ''I'm So Excited'' (The Pointer Sisters) ''Sad Songs (Say So Much)''(Elton John) Sad Songs Medley:"I Don’t Care Much"/ "When The Sun Comes Out", "I Couldn't Be Happier" (Kander & Ebb) ''I Don't Want To Know,'' (from the musical ''The Madwoman Of Chaillot'' )"Wherever He Ain’t" (from "Mack & Mabel") And included is ''London Town,'' a cheeky version by the late Fred Ebb, of a traditional, slightly bawdy British folk ballade. Miss Minnelli confides to the audience that ''really what this show is all about is playing different characters - all women.'' Next comes 'Some People'' (from ''Gypsy'') and the entire mood and tempo of the performance changes. "The Boys In The Band"/"Here's To My Band". Changing quickly to another costume, a black tuxedo suit, and red sequinned tie. Liza tries some Break dancing with a trio called The Foot Lockers; Wiping her face with a towel, revealing herself below the makeup, Liza confesses that ''It's harder than it looks,'' adding that she just recently had turned 40. Next comes the brilliant "Saga Of Emma Finch"(from "70 Girls 70") She uses a director’s chair, and some spotlights to fashion beautifully effective versions of ''You've Let Yourself Go,'' ''He's Funny That Way,'' and ''I Love A Piano", The big finale is ''New York, New York,'' and ''Cabaret'', and for her encore "But The World Goes ’Round"

JUDY GARLAND
JUDY GARLAND 1 DVD & LIZA AT THE PALLADIUM LONDON UK 1964 PLUS MORE 53 min pro shot black & white, vg picture... fans of this brand of showbiz razzmatazz will be satisfied with the duets between the women (especially trading verses on a medley of "Happy Days Are Here Again" and "Get Happy"). Judy opens the show with the reliable chest sweller "Once in a Lifetime" and delivers a tutorial in song dynamics with "The Man That Got Away." She appears rather shrunken and tired but still comes on like a trouper, fending off the audience's constant heckling for "Over the Rainbow" (as though she might forget it?) before finally handing the song back to them as a touching sing-along. This was Garland's last appearance at the Palladium. It's also a passing of the torch to Liza, who would later become the kind of polished dynamo embodied by her mother, more than capable of holding down her own one-woman shows. THE PLUS MORE IS JUDY GARLAND DUETS, 63 minutes, crystal, with count basie, barbara streisand, ethel merman, bobby darin, dean & frank, leana horne, peggy lee, liza and a few others
