CARRIE THE MUSICAL 1 DVD 10/10/13 Seattle, WA. Alice Ripley (Margaret White), Keaton Whittaker (Carrie White), Kendra Kassebaum (Miss Gardner), Larissa Schmitz (Sue Snell), Kody Bringman (Tommy Ross), Tessa Archer (Chris Hargensen). Based on the revised Off-Broadway version, and presented at the Balagan Theatre. This was recorded at the final run-through prior to opening night, so there are a few “holds” as they worked out the kinks: -After “Evening Prayers” there is a hold to change all microphone batteries, resulting in most of the song being run a second time (the sound check was removed and put as a bonus at the end of act two); -During the scene where Carrie is getting ready for the prom a microphone made a "farting" noise and Alice grabbed her butt and said "sorry" which made the cast and tech crew laugh; -The first attempt at dumping the blood on Carrie didn’t work, for the second attempt, it got into Keaton’s eyes, which resulted in Louis Hobson (the show’s director and Alice’s Next To Normal co-star) to come up on stage; -Alice didn’t have the rubber prop knife for the end, she had a real knife- so she mocked stabbing Carrie. Despite these run through glitches, this is a fantastic production. Well filmed with a nice mix of close-ups and full stage shots and no obstructions. A

A play about a newlywed couple moving into the house of the second-time bride’s parents. The title character soon finds herself caught between her seemingly-ideal husband and her family. DREAMGIRLS 1 DVD 2018 London Moya Angela (Effie White), Brennyn Lark (Deena Jones), Asmeret Ghebremichael (Lorell Robinson), Kimmy Edwards (Michelle Morris) Tosh Wanogho-Maud (James Thunder Early), Durone Stokes (CC Brown), Delroy Brown Marty), Ryan Reid (understudy Curtis Taylor Jr.) Moya Angela starred as Effie in the 2009 US Tour, before taking over the role from Amber Riley in London. This is an interesting production in that it uses 85% of Michael Bennett’s original staging and choreography, where it veers from the original is because of changes needed to accommodate the cheaper set. The camera work is a little shaky, and the balcony railing is usually in the shot, sometimes obliterating the action onstage. Missing about the first 20 minutes or so of the second act. B

GREASE: LIVE 1 DVD 1/31/16 FOX-TV Aaron Tveit (Danny Zuko), Julianne Hough (Sandy), Vanessa Hudgens (Rizzo), Kether Donahue (Jan), Keke Palmer (Marty), Carlos PenaVega (Kenickie), Elle McLemore (Patty Simcox), Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer (Cha-Cha), Mario Lopez (Vince Fontaine), Carley Rae Jepson (Frenchy), Jordan Fisher (Doody), Ana Gasteyer (Principal McGee), Joe Jonas (Johnny Casino). Patterned on similar live television musicals that had recently been produced by NBC, the production incorporated elements and songs from both the original stage musical and the 1978 film version of Grease, as well as additional songs that were not present in either. In an effort to emulate the "energy" of a theatrical setting, live audiences were incorporated into the production's stagings. Grease: Live was broadcast from Warner Bros. Studios, utilizing two soundstages and the studio's outdoor backlot—the usage of the latter was notably affected by rain in the Los Angeles area on the day of the broadcast. A
HAPPY ARCADIA 1 DVD 1994 Boston, MA Chad Smith, David Magill, Diane Di Stasio, Lydia Magill, Charles Baad. A production of the Royal Victorian Opera Theatre. Happy Arcadia is a musical with a libretto by W. S. Gilbert and music originally by Frederic Clay that premiered on October 28, 1872 at the Gallery of Illustration. It was one of four collaborations between Gilbert and Clay between 1869 and 1876. The original music was lost, but was later replaced with music by Arthur Sullivan. Not a true Gilbert and Sullivan musical, Happy Arcadia has a typical Gilbertian topsy-turvy plot in which magic items grant wishes and each of the characters becomes someone else. As the original score is long lost, others have created their own, and this features Jonathan Strong's adaptation of Sullivan's non-Gilbert and Sullivan music. Filmed for a local cable-access channel. A-.

Heads appear in the shot, as do the occasional waiter (who can sometimes block as much as half the shot for a minute at a time), but overall really not too bad. Ends abruptly, missing the last few seconds of the show. A-

Blake (Lorenzo), Bobby Conte Thornton (Calogero), Ariana DeBose (Jane), Lucia Giannetta (Rosina), Bradley Gibson (Tyrone), Hudson Loverro (Young Calogero). “Based on the critically acclaimed play that inspired the now classic film, this streetwise musical will take you to the stoops of the Bronx in the 1960s—where a young man is caught between the father he loves and the mob boss he’d love to be”. The Band’s Visit 10/16/17 ~ Broadway Tony Shalhoub, Katrina Lenk, George Abud, Etai Benson, John Cariani, Adam Kantor, Andrew Polk, Ari'el Stachel, Bill Army, Rachel Prather, Jonathan Raviv, Sharone, Sayegh, Kristen Sieh, Alok Tewari. The Band’s Visit is a musical composed by David Yazbek with book by Itamar Moses. The musical is based on the 2007 film The Band's Visit. The musical premiered Off-Broadway in December 2016 and won the 2017 Obie Award for Musical Theatre as well as other awards such as the New York Drama Critics' Circle award for Best Musical. “In 1996, an Egyptian Police Band arrives in Israel to play a concert at the Arab Culture Center in Petah Tikvah. However, they inadvertently buy bus tickets to Bet Hatikvah, an isolated village in the desert rather than their concert venue. With no bus until morning and no hotel in sight, these unlikely travelers are taken in by the locals. Under the spell of the desert sky, their lives become intertwined in the most unexpected ways. The Band’s Visit celebrates the deeply human ways music, longing and laughter can connect us all”. Well filmed from the balcony. There is one 4-minute blackout due to some disturbance in the theatre, but the filmer inserted production stills over the audio, so there’s no black screen. A
56th ANNUAL PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS 1 DVD 9/19/04 ABC-TV. Hosted by Garry Shandling. The HBO miniseries Angels in America, had the most successful night in Emmy history. It became the first, and only, show to sweep every major category, going 7 for 7. It also joined Caesar's Hour, in 1957, as the only shows to win the four main acting categories. Upstart comedy series Arrested Development won Outstanding Comedy Series and three major awards overall. Its pilot became the 12th episode to accomplish the directing/writing double. After years of winning everything but the top prize, The Sopranos finally took home the crown for Outstanding Drama Series, knocking off four-time defending champion The West Wing. It led all dramas with 12 major nominations, and four major wins. Entering its final ceremony, five-time series champion Frasier needed five major wins to tie The Mary Tyler Moore Show's record of 27. Because it was only nominated in five major categories, breaking the record was not possible. Though it did not tie the record, Frasier finished its Emmy career on a high note, winning three major awards, the most it had won since 1998. Its 25 major wins put it at second all time. When adding its wins in technical categories, its total rises to 37, the most for any show. Also included on the disc: E!’s Red Carpet coverage with Star Jones (Joan & Melissa Rivers in a salary dispute with E! took their coverage to the TV Guide Channel), and ABC’s pre-show Red Carpet coverage with Tom Bergeron and The Muppets. 5 hours total.
