CARRIE THE MUSICAL 1 DVD 10/10/13 Seattle, WA. Alice Ripley (Margaret White), Keaton Whittaker (Carrie White), Kendra Kassebaum (Miss Gardner), Larissa Schmitz (Sue Snell), Kody Bringman (Tommy Ross), Tessa Archer (Chris Hargensen). Based on the revised Off-Broadway version, and presented at the Balagan Theatre. This was recorded at the final run-through prior to opening night, so there are a few “holds” as they worked out the kinks: -After “Evening Prayers” there is a hold to change all microphone batteries, resulting in most of the song being run a second time (the sound check was removed and put as a bonus at the end of act two); -During the scene where Carrie is getting ready for the prom a microphone made a "farting" noise and Alice grabbed her butt and said "sorry" which made the cast and tech crew laugh; -The first attempt at dumping the blood on Carrie didn’t work, for the second attempt, it got into Keaton’s eyes, which resulted in Louis Hobson (the show’s director and Alice’s Next To Normal co-star) to come up on stage; -Alice didn’t have the rubber prop knife for the end, she had a real knife- so she mocked stabbing Carrie.  Despite these run through glitches, this is a fantastic production.  Well filmed with a nice mix of close-ups and full stage shots and no obstructions. Five young guys on the streets of Detroit were discovered by Berry Gordy, who signed them to his legendary new label. With their signature dance moves and unmistakable harmonies, they rose to the top of the charts—creating an amazing 42 Top Ten Hits with 14 reaching number one. DREAMGIRLS 1 DVD 2018 London Moya Angela (Effie White), Brennyn Lark (Deena Jones), Asmeret Ghebremichael (Lorell Robinson), Kimmy Edwards (Michelle Morris) Tosh Wanogho-Maud (James Thunder Early), Durone Stokes (CC Brown), Delroy Brown Marty), Ryan Reid (understudy Curtis Taylor Jr.)  Moya Angela starred as Effie in the 2009 US Tour, before taking over the role from Amber Riley in London. This is an interesting production in that it uses 85% of Michael Bennett’s original staging and choreography, where it veers from the original is because of changes needed to accommodate the cheaper set.  The camera work is a little shaky, and the balcony railing is usually in the shot, sometimes obliterating the action onstage.  Missing about the first 20 minutes or so of the second act. FAR EAST 1 DVD 5/20/01 PBS-TV. Michael Hayden, Lisa Emery, Miou, Bill Smitrovitch, Jo Yang.  Based on the play by A. R. Gurney. Far East was first produced at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, Massachusetts in July 1998. It premiered Off-Broadway at Lincoln Center's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater in January 1999.  Michael Hayden recreates his role here, as does most of the original cast. “Set in 1954, Far East is the story of a young Naval officer, who is the heir to a Milwaukee beer fortune, on tour of duty in occupied Japan. He becomes trapped between his love for a beautiful Japanese woman and his family's value system, which he is trying to escape. With clever echoes of Madame Butterfly and From Here to Eternity, tensions mount at the collision of East with West, past with present, and duty with passion in this beautifully-crafted play”.  (At the time of the filming, Michael Hayden was appearing in Cabaret on Broadway, so for the 9 days of the shoot, he would be filming during the day, and performing in Cabaret at night).  Presented as part of the PBS series “Stage On Screen”.  90 minutes.  A

HAPPY ARCADIA 1 DVD 1994 Boston, MA Chad Smith, David Magill, Diane Di Stasio, Lydia Magill, Charles Baad.  A production of the Royal Victorian Opera Theatre.  Happy Arcadia is a musical with a libretto by W. S. Gilbert and music originally by Frederic Clay that premiered on October 28, 1872 at the Gallery of Illustration. It was one of four collaborations between Gilbert and Clay between 1869 and 1876. The original music was lost, but was later replaced with music by Arthur Sullivan.  Not a true Gilbert and Sullivan musical, Happy Arcadia has a typical Gilbertian topsy-turvy plot in which magic items grant wishes and each of the characters becomes someone else. As the original score is long lost, others have created their own, and this features Jonathan Strong's adaptation of Sullivan's non-Gilbert and Sullivan music.  Filmed for a local cable-access channel.  A-.

THE WIZ 1 DVD 5/84 Broadway, Revival. Stephanie Mills (Dorothy), Gregg Baker (Lion), Howard Porter (Tinman), Charles Valentino (Scarecrow), Peggie Blue (Aunt Em), Ann Duquesnay (Glinda), Juanita Fleming (Addaperle), Carl Hall (The Wiz), Ella Mitchell (Evillene), Jasmine Guy (Crow/Kalidah/Emerald City Citizen).  This was the “touring revival”, and wedged Stephanie Mills back into the show to reprise her role from 1975 after the rest of the cast had toured together with the show on and off for more than 6 years.  The show was a major flop and closed after just 13 performances, and generally panned for an inferior cast, an inferior set, and inferior costumes (although everyone agreed the choreography was the production’s saving redemption).  Even Stephanie Mills, who received acclaim for the original production, was slammed for being too old, and simply going through the motions. (Clive Barnes said in his review: “The show is not quite as good as it was in 1975. It has become cruder and cheaper. The new cast is not as good as the old cast. Even Stephanie Mills is not as good as Stephanie Mills, and even first time round she was scarcely great. In box-office terms, Yul Brynner she never was”).  Very nicely filmed, but some generational loss and a little dark. B

Rob McClure (Nick Bottom), Will Chase (Shakespeare), Josh Grisetti (Nigel Bottom), Jenny Hill (u/s Bea), Catherine Brunell (Portia), Brad Oscar (Nostradamus), David Beach (Brother Jerimiah). Well filmed. Missing the first 30 seconds of the show. Something Really Rotten!

4/25/16 ~ New York

Hosted by the brothers who created Something Rotten!, Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, with original cast members Christian Borle, Heidi Blickenstaff, Brad Oscar, John Carani, Kate Reinders, David Hibbard, and others. This one-night-only concert, presented at Feinstein’s 54 Below, feature’s songs from Something Rotten! "that got revamped, revised or rejected". Some of the cut songs include: "Words You Never Heard" (a song about some of the words Shakespeare introduced into the English language); "Nigel’s Lament" (The lyrics include "It all comes down to this, I suck, I suck/I hold my quill, but it still runs amuck…"); "On The Top" (which became "Bottom’s Gonna Be On Top"); "Right Hand Man" (to be sung by Nick’s wife, Bea filled with vague insults); "The Trouble With You", "Loverly Love", "Desperate Times", and we get to hear several of the TEN versions of "Omelette" written ranging from rock ‘n’ roll to Andrews Sisters inspired music. Filmed from looks like the second row of tables. Heads appear in the shot, as do the occasional waiter (who can sometimes block as much as half the shot for a minute at a time), but overall really not too bad. Ends abruptly, missing the last few seconds of the show. A-

With no bus until morning and no hotel in sight, these unlikely travelers are taken in by the locals. Under the spell of the desert sky, their lives become intertwined in the most unexpected ways. The Band’s Visit celebrates the deeply human ways music, longing and laughter can connect us all”.  Well filmed from the balcony.  There is one 4-minute blackout due to some disturbance in the theatre, but the filmer inserted production stills over the audio, so there’s no black screen.   A

52nd ANNUAL PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS 1 DVD (Highlights) 9/10/00 ABC-TV. Hosted by Garry Shandling and was broadcast on ABC.  Two networks, Bravo and The WB, received their first major nominations. This remains the only year in which a show from The WB or its descendants received a major nomination. For its second season, Will & Grace won Outstanding Comedy Series and led all comedy series with three major wins overall. Ally McBeal became the first defending champion, that wasn't cancelled or ended, that failed to be nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series since Get Smart in 1970. The drama field was dominated by first year series The West Wing. In addition to winning Outstanding Drama Series it won five major awards total, leading all shows. When adding The West Wing 's technical categories it won nine awards, a record that still stands.  The disc also includes Joan & Melissa’s Red Carpet Special on E!, and ABC’s pre-show hosted by Tom Bergeron and Nancy O’Dell.  5 hours total.   A

56th ANNUAL PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS 1 DVD 9/19/04 ABC-TV. Hosted by Garry Shandling. The HBO miniseries Angels in America, had the most successful night in Emmy history. It became the first, and only, show to sweep every major category, going 7 for 7. It also joined Caesar's Hour, in 1957, as the only shows to win the four main acting categories. Upstart comedy series Arrested Development won Outstanding Comedy Series and three major awards overall. Its pilot became the 12th episode to accomplish the directing/writing double. After years of winning everything but the top prize, The Sopranos finally took home the crown for Outstanding Drama Series, knocking off four-time defending champion The West Wing. It led all dramas with 12 major nominations, and four major wins. Entering its final ceremony, five-time series champion Frasier needed five major wins to tie The Mary Tyler Moore Show's record of 27. Because it was only nominated in five major categories, breaking the record was not possible. Though it did not tie the record, Frasier finished its Emmy career on a high note, winning three major awards, the most it had won since 1998. Its 25 major wins put it at second all time. When adding its wins in technical categories, its total rises to 37, the most for any show.  Also included on the disc: E!’s Red Carpet coverage with Star Jones (Joan & Melissa Rivers in a salary dispute with E! took their coverage to the TV Guide Channel), and ABC’s pre-show Red Carpet coverage with Tom Bergeron and The Muppets.  5 hours total.   A-

But this is more than a romp - it points up the depressing present and empty future for these comprehensive no-hopers from the backstreets of Liverpool, for whom a day out is as much as they can expect”.  Presented “in-the-round”.  Filmed using one camera on a tripod.   A-.

ROCKY HORROR RARITIES 1 DVD COMPILATION… Compilation of three RARE Rocky Horror TV appearances.  Includes: 1.  The Rocky Horror Treatment: TV special that was released in syndication in 1981 to help promote SHOCK TREATMENT, the follow-up to THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. The bulk of the special focuses on RHPS, which wasn't widely known outside of the midnight circuit at that point. The special briefly touches on the roots of ROCKY HORROR, but mostly it documents how the film became a cult sensation. The second part of the special chronicles a bit of the making of SHOCK TREATMENT. There's a bunch of behind the scenes footage, as well as interviews with the cast and crew, and Christopher Malcolm does a lot of camera mugging in-character as Denton's resident cop, Vance Parker. Some of the RHPS footage from this special was recycled in other RHPS specials, but very little of the SHOCK TREATMENT footage has shown up elsewhere.  (23 minutes), 2. 1985, The Morning Show: To commemorate the 10th anniversary of RHPS, writer/star Richard O’Brien, fan club president Sal Piro and Barry Bostwick appear on The Morning Show. (5 minutes), 3. Night Flight: The '80s music series "Night Flight" was responsible for exposing people to things they probably wouldn't otherwise see, and in 1985, it offered Americans their first glimpse of the Brad & Janet's verses of "Superheroes," which were inexplicably trimmed out of ROCKY HORROR after its initial theatrical release. Hosted by a camera mugging Richard O'Brien, this 1985 episode of "Night Flight" gives some back story on the cult of Rocky Horror, though it mainly features the songs from the film, snipped out and edited like music videos.  (26 minutes).   A-.

LAURIE BEECHMAN AT THE BALLROOM 1 DVD 11/30/91 New York. Filmed at the closing performance of a three week engagement at The Ballroom in New York City. NY Times Review: "Laurie Beechman, a cabaret performer who is familiar to Broadway audiences from shows like "Cats" and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," has always tried to keep one foot in contemporary pop while building a career in the musical theater. In her new cabaret act, the balance between the two worlds has shifted precariously toward pop. A sobbing heart-on-sleeve belter with a buzzing vibrato, Ms. Beechman likes to shoot the moon at every possible opportunity with histrionic gestures reminiscent of Barbra Streisand's. This approach may suit grandiose ballads like "Memory" (from "Cats") and "The Music That Makes Me Dance" (from "Funny Girl"), but it can be lethal when applied to an attenuated rendition of the Young Rascals' 1967 hit "How Can I Be Sure?" The singer's new act has far too many such poorly conceived musical choices. Bruce W. Coyle, Ms. Beechman's pianist and musical director, has saddled her with fussy, diffuse arrangements for a five-piece band in which a saxophone frequently clashes with her voice. Most of the songs are done too slowly, with too many emotional stops pulled out too soon. The worst choice was to give Ms. Beechman two inept backup singers. At the opening-night show on Tuesday, she was joined by Frank Mastrone and Dan Guzman, fellow Broadway performers, whose thin and off-pitch harmonies destroyed everything they touched". Filmed using one camera on a tripod. A-.

"Two married couples spend the Fourth of July weekend at a summer house on Fire Island. The brother of Sally Truman has recently died of AIDS and has willed his Fire Island house to her. Her husband, Sam, opens the play testing the chlorine level of the water in the pool. It becomes clear that everyone is afraid of somehow getting AIDS from swimming in the same pool that Sally’s brother used to swim in. As she believes, "One drop of water in your mouth or an open sore and we’ll be infected with my brother and his black lover and God knows who else was in here". Sam’s sister, Chloe and her husband, John, share the apprehension, though John Has cancer of the esophagus and is not particularly worried about AIDS. In fact he intentionally sticks his head in the pool and gets a mouthful of water which he spits at the others. The play reveals both marriages in trouble and many examples of superficial values and prejudices". SEE NO EVIL 1 DVD The Moors Murders 2006 Crime/Drama/Thriller/Made-for-TV. Joanne Froggatt, Maxine Peake, Sean Harris, Matthew McNulty, George Costigan. See No Evil: The Moors Murders is a two-part British television serial. The serial tells the story of the Moors murders, which were committed during the 1960s by Myra Hindley and Ian Brady, from the view of Hindley's sister, Maureen Smith, and her husband David. The serial is the first known dramatization of the notorious killing spree, and it was produced to mark the 40th anniversary of Hindley and Brady's trial. It was made with the full backing of the victims' families and was based on two years of research. Writer Neil McKay based the story on the gathered research; which included interviews with detectives, relatives of the murdered children, and Hindley's brother-in-law David Smith. The only murder which featured was that of 17-year-old Edward Evans at Hindley and Brady's house in Hattersley. However, the investigation into the disappearance of the four other victims is mentioned on several occasions, particularly that of twelve-year-old John Kilbride. The production won the BAFTA for Best Drama Serial at the 2007 ceremony. A
