Finding Neverland - 2/25/17 ~ Los Angeles, Tour - Billy Harrigan Tighe (JM Barrie), Christine Dwyer (Sylvia Llewelyn Davies), Tom Hewitt (Charles Frohman/Hook), Crystal Kellogg (Mary Barrie), Karen Murphy (Mrs. du Maurier), Mitchell Wray (Peter Llewelyn Davies), Finn Faulconer (George Llewelyn Davies), Jordan Cole (Michael Llewelyn Davies), Colin Wheeler (Jack Llewelyn Davies), Dwelvan David (Mr. Henshaw), Matt Wolpe (Mr. Cromer), Victoria Huston-Elem (Miss Bassett), Lael Van Keuren (Miss Jones), Corey Rives (Albert), Thomas Miller (Elliot), Noah Plomgren (Lord Cannan), Dee Tomasetta (Peter Pan). This tour version of the show bears little resemblance to the Broadway production. Many of the scenes are different, as is the dialog, set, staging, costumes, etc. There are even a few brand new songs. Beautifully filmed from the balcony with no issues. A

The Goodbye Girl -,1993 ~ Broadway

Bernadette Peters and Martin Short in Neil Simon's classic with music by Marvin Hamlisch. Colorful. A must for Bernadette fans! Great performance shots, but unfortunately a few "hides." Still, a nice tape of the highlights. Plus, a special about the show's opening night. Interviews with Carol Channing, Gwen Verdon, Neil Simon, Marvin Hamlisch and others. B

The Goodbye Girl - 1998 ~ 1st National Tour

Eddie Mekka (Best known as Carmine Ragusa from Laverne And Shirley), Connie SaLoutos, Amanda Crocker. Filmed during the show's first US tour. The first 20 minutes are recorded through the house camera, then it switches to being filmed from a tripod with zooms and close ups. Some generational loss. B

The Goodbye Girl - Date Unknown ~ US Tour

Donna McKechnie, Alyse Wojciechowski, William Ryall. A-

The Goodbye Girl - 1993 ~ London

Ann Crumb. Gary Wilmot. B

In Transit - 12/29/16 ~ Broadway - Chesney Snow (understudy Boxman), Laurel Harris (understudy Ali), Justin Guarini (Trent), Margo Seibert (Jane), James Snyder (Nate), Arbender Robinson (understudy Steven), Moya Angela (Ms. Williams/Momma/Althea), Mariand Torres (Nina), Gerianne Perez (Kathy), David Abeles (Dave), Nicholas Ward (Chris). A good capture overall with a few issues. There are about ten minutes of blackouts total; two minutes during the opening number, two and a half minutes at the beginning of "Do What I Do" and the scene before it, one minute during the scene before "Four Days Home", two and a half minutes during "Saturday Night Obsess", one minute at the end of "Keep It Going", and a couple other quick dropouts. There is also one head on the right side; it’s worked around as much as possible, but it occasionally blocks the action. B+

Kinky Boots

11/4/12 ~ Chicago, IL, Pre-Broadway

Stark Sands, Billy Porter, Annaleigh Ashford, Celina Carvajal, Danie Stewart Sherman, Marcus Neville. Beautifully filmed, using a high definition camcorder. Recorded at the final Chicago performance before moving to Broadway, and includes many changes from the version recorded at the first performance on 10/4/12 including the addition of a new song and many line changes. A

Kinky Boots - 10/2/12 ~ Chicago, IL, Pre-Broadway - Stark Sands (Charlie Price), Billy Porter (Lola), Annaleigh Ashford (Lauren), Celina Carvajal (Nicola), Daniel Stewart Sherman (Don), Marcus Neville (George). Music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, book by Harvey Fierstein. This was recorded at the very first preview, so there has been a lot of changes made since, and some numbers edited or removed altogether. Based on the true story behind the 2005 film, Kinky Boots tells the story of a struggling shoemaker and his drag queen business partner. To avoid bankruptcy Charlie develops a plan to produce custom fetish-type footwear for drag artists rather than the men's dress shoes that his firm is known for. In order to save his workers from losing their source of income, Charlie partners with Lola, a drag queen, to save the business he inherited. Nicely filmed using a Hi-Definition camcorder. A

Something Rotten!

3/28/15 ~ Broadway

Brian d'Arcy James, Christian Borle, John Cariani, Heidi Blickenstaff, Brad Oscar, Kate Reinders, Brooks Ashmanskas, Peter Bartlett. Nicely filmed with a High Definition camcorder. The filmer sat in the balcony a little off to stage left. The balcony railing is occasionally visible, but never really gets in the way. A

Something Rotten!

6/20/16 ~ Broadway

Rob McClure (Nick Bottom), John Cariani (Nigel Bottom), Christian Borle (Shakespeare), Heidi Blickenstaff (Bea Bottom), Catherine Runell (understudy Portia), Brad Oscar (Nostradamus), Andre Ward (Minstrel/Snug), David Beach (Brother Jeremiah), David Hibbard (Francis Flute/Eyepatch Man), Stacey Todd Holt (Peter Quince), Brian Ogilvie (Tom Snout). Nicely filmed, with just a few quick dropouts here and there. Heads appear in the bottom of the frame, and regularly block the actor’s feet. A-

Something Rotten!

7/23/16 ~ Broadway

Rob McClure (Nick Bottom), Will Chase (Shakespeare), Josh Grisetti (Nigel Bottom), Jenny Hill (u/s Bea), Catherine Brunell (Portia), Brad Oscar (Nostradamus), David Beach (Brother Jerimiah). Well filmed. Missing the first 30 seconds of the show. Will Chase was supposed to originate the role of Shakespeare (he had done it in all of the workshops), but instead did the TV series Nashville, so it’s nice to see him finally get to do the role. A

Something Really Rotten!

4/25/16 ~ New York

Hosted by the brothers who created Something Rotten!, Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, with original cast members Christian Borle, Heidi Blickenstaff, Brad Oscar, John Carani, Kate Reinders, David Hibbard, and others. This one-night-only concert, presented at Feinstein’s 54 Below, feature’s songs from Something Rotten! "that got revamped, revised or rejected". Some of the cut songs include: "Words You Never Heard" (a song about some of the words Shakespeare introduced into the English language); "Nigel’s Lament" (The lyrics include "It all comes down to this, I suck, I suck/I hold my quill, but it still runs amuck…"); "On The Top" (which became "Bottom’s Gonna Be On Top"); "Right Hand Man" (to be sung by Nick’s wife, Bea filled with vague insults); "The Trouble With You", "Loverly Love", "Desperate Times", and we get to hear several of the TEN versions of "Omelette" written ranging from rock ‘n’ roll to Andrews Sisters inspired music. Filmed from looks like the second row of tables. Heads appear in the shot, as do the occasional waiter (who can sometimes block as much as half the shot for a minute at a time), but overall really not too bad. Ends abruptly, missing the last few seconds of the show. A-

1997 ~ Broadway

Brent Spiner, Tom Aldredge, Gregg Edelman. RARE! Only video I have ever seen of this production. Mostly a full stage shot with few closeups and some spotlight washout. Video filmed at the Criterion Theatre, not the Gershwin. B

A Bronx Tale  - 5/31/18 ~ Broadway - Chazz Palminteri, Nick Cordero, Richard H. Blake, Hudson Loverro, Rory Max Kaplan, Joseph Sammour, Cary Tedder, Robert Neary. Chazz Palminteri returns to Broadway in A Bronx Tale, the musical based on his solo show that also inspired the 1993 film of the same name. The Oscar nominee takes on the role of Sonny on weekday performances, becoming the first actor to play the same part in a play, film, and stage musical.  Nicely filmed from the balcony, with a nice mix of closeups and fuller stage shots for the production numbers.   A

A Bronx Tale - 11/14/16 ~ Broadway - Nick Cordero (Sonny), Richard H. Blake (Lorenzo), Bobby Conte Thornton (Calogero), Ariana DeBose (Jane), Lucia Giannetta (Rosina), Bradley Gibson (Tyrone), Hudson Loverro (Young Calogero). “Based on the critically acclaimed play that inspired the now classic film, this streetwise musical will take you to the stoops of the Bronx in the 1960s—where a young man is caught between the father he loves and the mob boss he’d love to be”.  Well filmed from the balcony, but the balcony railing is visible throughout, blocking the bottom of the frame (usually just the actor’s feet).   A

The musical premiered Off-Broadway in December 2016 and won the 2017 Obie Award for Musical Theatre as well as other awards such as the New York Drama Critics' Circle award for Best Musical. “In 1996, an Egyptian Police Band arrives in Israel to play a concert at the Arab Culture Center in Petah Tikvah. However, they inadvertently buy bus tickets to Bet Hatikvah, an isolated village in the desert rather than their concert venue. With no bus until morning and no hotel in sight, these unlikely travelers are taken in by the locals. Under the spell of the desert sky, their lives become intertwined in the most unexpected ways. The Band’s Visit celebrates the deeply human ways music, longing and laughter can connect us all”.  Well filmed from the balcony.  There is one 4-minute blackout due to some disturbance in the theatre, but the filmer inserted production stills over the audio, so there’s no black screen.   A

52nd ANNUAL PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS 1 DVD (Highlights) 9/10/00 ABC-TV. Hosted by Garry Shandling and was broadcast on ABC.  Two networks, Bravo and The WB, received their first major nominations. This remains the only year in which a show from The WB or its descendants received a major nomination. For its second season, Will & Grace won Outstanding Comedy Series and led all comedy series with three major wins overall. Ally McBeal became the first defending champion, that wasn't cancelled or ended, that failed to be nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series since Get Smart in 1970. The drama field was dominated by first year series The West Wing. In addition to winning Outstanding Drama Series it won five major awards total, leading all shows. When adding The West Wing 's technical categories it won nine awards, a record that still stands.  The disc also includes Joan & Melissa’s Red Carpet Special on E!, and ABC’s pre-show hosted by Tom Bergeron and Nancy O’Dell.  5 hours total.   A

56th ANNUAL PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS 1 DVD 9/19/04 ABC-TV. Hosted by Garry Shandling. The HBO miniseries Angels in America, had the most successful night in Emmy history. It became the first, and only, show to sweep every major category, going 7 for 7. It also joined Caesar's Hour, in 1957, as the only shows to win the four main acting categories. Upstart comedy series Arrested Development won Outstanding Comedy Series and three major awards overall. Its pilot became the 12th episode to accomplish the directing/writing double. After years of winning everything but the top prize, The Sopranos finally took home the crown for Outstanding Drama Series, knocking off four-time defending champion The West Wing. It led all dramas with 12 major nominations, and four major wins. Entering its final ceremony, five-time series champion Frasier needed five major wins to tie The Mary Tyler Moore Show's record of 27. Because it was only nominated in five major categories, breaking the record was not possible. Though it did not tie the record, Frasier finished its Emmy career on a high note, winning three major awards, the most it had won since 1998. Its 25 major wins put it at second all time. When adding its wins in technical categories, its total rises to 37, the most for any show.  Also included on the disc: E!’s Red Carpet coverage with Star Jones (Joan & Melissa Rivers in a salary dispute with E! took their coverage to the TV Guide Channel), and ABC’s pre-show Red Carpet coverage with Tom Bergeron and The Muppets.  5 hours total.   A-

ROCKY HORROR RARITIES 1 DVD COMPILATION… Compilation of three RARE Rocky Horror TV appearances.  Includes: 1.  The Rocky Horror Treatment: TV special that was released in syndication in 1981 to help promote SHOCK TREATMENT, the follow-up to THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. The bulk of the special focuses on RHPS, which wasn't widely known outside of the midnight circuit at that point. The special briefly touches on the roots of ROCKY HORROR, but mostly it documents how the film became a cult sensation. The second part of the special chronicles a bit of the making of SHOCK TREATMENT. There's a bunch of behind the scenes footage, as well as interviews with the cast and crew, and Christopher Malcolm does a lot of camera mugging in-character as Denton's resident cop, Vance Parker. Some of the RHPS footage from this special was recycled in other RHPS specials, but very little of the SHOCK TREATMENT footage has shown up elsewhere.  (23 minutes), 2. 1985, The Morning Show: To commemorate the 10th anniversary of RHPS, writer/star Richard O’Brien, fan club president Sal Piro and Barry Bostwick appear on The Morning Show. (5 minutes), 3. Night Flight: The '80s music series "Night Flight" was responsible for exposing people to things they probably wouldn't otherwise see, and in 1985, it offered Americans their first glimpse of the Brad & Janet's verses of "Superheroes," which were inexplicably trimmed out of ROCKY HORROR after its initial theatrical release. Hosted by a camera mugging Richard O'Brien, this 1985 episode of "Night Flight" gives some back story on the cult of Rocky Horror, though it mainly features the songs from the film, snipped out and edited like music videos.  (26 minutes).   A-.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a two-part stage play written by Jack Thorne based on an original new story by Thorne, J. K. Rowling and John Tiffany. The story begins nineteen years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and follows Harry Potter, now a Ministry of Magic employee, and his younger son Albus Severus Potter, who is about to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. At the 2017 Laurence Olivier Awards, the London production received a record-breaking eleven nominations and again won a record-breaking nine awards, including Best New Play, Best Actor, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Director. The play will open at Broadway on April 22, 2018, at the Lyric Theatre in New York complete with most of the London cast. Filmed from the balcony, with no zooms or pans-mostly just a full stage shot. But for a show with so many special effects, a full stage shot isn’t bad. Also, the filmer held the camera at an odd angle, so the picture is a little crooked. B

LAURIE BEECHMAN AT THE BALLROOM 1 DVD 11/30/91 New York. Filmed at the closing performance of a three week engagement at The Ballroom in New York City. NY Times Review: "Laurie Beechman, a cabaret performer who is familiar to Broadway audiences from shows like "Cats" and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," has always tried to keep one foot in contemporary pop while building a career in the musical theater. In her new cabaret act, the balance between the two worlds has shifted precariously toward pop. A sobbing heart-on-sleeve belter with a buzzing vibrato, Ms. Beechman likes to shoot the moon at every possible opportunity with histrionic gestures reminiscent of Barbra Streisand's. This approach may suit grandiose ballads like "Memory" (from "Cats") and "The Music That Makes Me Dance" (from "Funny Girl"), but it can be lethal when applied to an attenuated rendition of the Young Rascals' 1967 hit "How Can I Be Sure?" The singer's new act has far too many such poorly conceived musical choices. Bruce W. Coyle, Ms. Beechman's pianist and musical director, has saddled her with fussy, diffuse arrangements for a five-piece band in which a saxophone frequently clashes with her voice. Most of the songs are done too slowly, with too many emotional stops pulled out too soon. The worst choice was to give Ms. Beechman two inept backup singers. At the opening-night show on Tuesday, she was joined by Frank Mastrone and Dan Guzman, fellow Broadway performers, whose thin and off-pitch harmonies destroyed everything they touched". Filmed using one camera on a tripod. A-.

The evening also included "A New World" by Jason Robert Brown, something from a developing musical about Charles Chaplin, "Rhythm of Life" from "Sweet Charity", a hilarious take on "Book Report" from You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, with new "Les Miz" lyrics, and lots more. LIPS TOGETHER, TEETH APART 1 DVD 8/28/91 Off-Broadway. Nathan Lane, Anthony Heald, Roxanne Hart, Deborah Rush. RARE! Terence McNally's play in its premier production at the Manhattan Theatre Club. "Two married couples spend the Fourth of July weekend at a summer house on Fire Island. The brother of Sally Truman has recently died of AIDS and has willed his Fire Island house to her. Her husband, Sam, opens the play testing the chlorine level of the water in the pool. It becomes clear that everyone is afraid of somehow getting AIDS from swimming in the same pool that Sally’s brother used to swim in. As she believes, "One drop of water in your mouth or an open sore and we’ll be infected with my brother and his black lover and God knows who else was in here". Sam’s sister, Chloe and her husband, John, share the apprehension, though John Has cancer of the esophagus and is not particularly worried about AIDS. In fact he intentionally sticks his head in the pool and gets a mouthful of water which he spits at the others. The play reveals both marriages in trouble and many examples of superficial values and prejudices". Shot from right center aisle, near the back of the small house, full stage shot, spotlight wash, low volume. B-.

PORTUGUESE KID 1 DVD 2/14/18 Off-Broadway/BroadwayHD. Jason Alexander, Pico Alexander, Aimee Carrero, Sherie Rene Scott, Mary Testa. Written by John Patrick Shanley ("Doubt", "Moonstruck"). "In Providence, Rhode Island, habitually widowed Atalanta (Sherie Rene Scott) pays a visit to her second-rate lawyer Barry Dragonetti (Jason Alexander). Intending to settle her latest husband’s affairs, this larger-than-life Greek tightwad quickly becomes a nightmare for her cheesy, self-aggrandizing attorney. Add Barry’s impossible Croatian mother (Mary Testa), a dash of current politics and a couple of opportunistic young lovers, and you have in hand a recipe for comic combustion". Captured live on 12/11/17 before an audience at Manhattan Theatre Club for BroadwayHD. A

SEE NO EVIL 1 DVD The Moors Murders 2006 Crime/Drama/Thriller/Made-for-TV. Joanne Froggatt, Maxine Peake, Sean Harris, Matthew McNulty, George Costigan. See No Evil: The Moors Murders is a two-part British television serial. The serial tells the story of the Moors murders, which were committed during the 1960s by Myra Hindley and Ian Brady, from the view of Hindley's sister, Maureen Smith, and her husband David. The serial is the first known dramatization of the notorious killing spree, and it was produced to mark the 40th anniversary of Hindley and Brady's trial. It was made with the full backing of the victims' families and was based on two years of research. Writer Neil McKay based the story on the gathered research; which included interviews with detectives, relatives of the murdered children, and Hindley's brother-in-law David Smith. The only murder which featured was that of 17-year-old Edward Evans at Hindley and Brady's house in Hattersley. However, the investigation into the disappearance of the four other victims is mentioned on several occasions, particularly that of twelve-year-old John Kilbride. The production won the BAFTA for Best Drama Serial at the 2007 ceremony. A

SEMINAR 1 DVD 10/31/11 ~ Broadway. Alan Rickman, Hamish Linklater, Jerry O'Connell, Hettienne Park, Lily Rabe. "In Seminar, four aspiring young novelists sign up for private writing classes with Leonard (Alan Rickman), an international literary figure. Under his recklessly brilliant and unorthodox instruction, some thrive and others flounder, alliances are made and broken, sex is used as a weapon and hearts are unmoored. The wordplay is not the only thing that turns vicious as innocence collides with experience in this biting new comedy". Well filmed from the balcony. Mostly full stage shots, with an occasional mid-zoom. No obstructions and crystal clear. Disc also includes a NY1 review, a NY1 interview with Alan Rickman, and the full 30-minute Theatre Talk devoted to the show. A.

SOAP MYTH 1 DVD 2012 New York. Greg Mullavey, Andi Potamkin, Donald Corren, Dee Pelletier. "More than a half century after WW II at the desperate urging of a passionate survivor, a young investigative reporter finds herself caught between numerous versions of the same story. Played out against the backdrop of deadline reporting and journalistic integrity, the critically acclaimed The Soap Myth by Jeff Cohen questions who has the right to write history—those people who have lived it and remember, those who study and protect it, or those who would seek to distort its very existence? And finally, what is all our responsibility once we know the truth?" Presented by the National Jewish Theatre Foundation, and professionally filmed for DigitalTheatre. A
