CHARLEY PRIDE 1 DVD I'M JUST ME - AMERICAN MASTERS 2019 - 53 minutes, crystal,  traces the improbable journey of Charley Pride, from his humble beginnings as a sharecropper’s son on a cotton farm in segregated Sledge, Mississippi to his career as a Negro American League baseball player and his meteoric rise as a trailblazing country music superstar. The new documentary reveals how Pride’s love for music led him from the Delta to a larger, grander world. In the 1940s, radio transcended racial barriers, making it possible for Pride to grow up listening to and imitating Grand Ole Opry stars like Ernest Tubb and Roy Acuff. The singer arrived in Nashville in 1963 while the city roiled with sit-ins and racial violence. But with boldness, perseverance and undeniable musical talent, he managed to parlay a series of fortuitous encounters with music industry insiders into a legacy of hit singles, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Narrated by Grammy-nominated country singer Tanya Tucker, the film features original interviews with country music royalty, including Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker and Marty Stuart, as well as on-camera conversations between Pride and special guests, including Rozene Pride (his wife of 61 years), Willie Nelson and fellow musicians.

SAMMY DAVIS JR 1 DVD I'VE GOTTA BE ME AMERICAN MASTERS 2019 - 100 minutes, crystal , s the first major film documentary to examine the performer’s vast career and his journey for identity through the shifting tides of civil rights and racial progress during 20th-century America. Sammy Davis, Jr., had the kind of career that was indisputably legendary, vast in scope and scale. And yet, his life was complex, complicated and contradictory. Davis strove to achieve the American Dream in a time of racial prejudice and shifting political territory. He was a veteran of increasingly outdated show business traditions and worked tirelessly to stay relevant, even as he frequently found himself bracketed by the bigotry of white America and the distaste of black America. Davis was the most public black figure to embrace Judaism, thereby yoking his identity to that of another persecuted minority. In Duke Ellington’s words, he was “beyond category.” ----- Featuring exclusive interviews with Billy Crystal, Norman Lear, Jerry Lewis, Whoopi Goldberg and Kim Novak, with never-before-seen photographs from Davis’ vast personal collection and rare footage from his performances in television, film and concert, American Masters explores the life and art of a uniquely-gifted entertainer whose trajectory paralleled the major flashpoints of American society, from the Depression through the 1980

Aladdin And His Winter Wish
12/27/13 ~ Pasadena, CA
Ben Vereen (Genie), Bruce Vilanch (Widow Twankey), Richard Karn (The Sultan), Jordan Fisher (Aladdin), Ashley Argota (Princess), Josh Adamson (Abanazar), Ben Giroux (Wishee Washee),
Vanessa Nichole (Slave of the Ring). Presented by the Pasadena Playhouse, and produced by Lythgoe Family Productions (headed by So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol’s Nigel Lythgoe, the show was written by Nigel’s wife, Bonnie, and is directed by his son Kris).  An updated version of the classic Arabian Nights tale, in the style of a traditional British family Panto (Panto, not to be confused with the theatrical medium of pantomime, is a form of musical comedy stage production, designed for family entertainment. It was developed in the United Kingdom in the 1700’s  and is generally performed during the Christmas and New Year season. Modern panto includes songs, slapstick comedy and dancing, employs gender-crossing actors, and combines topical humor with a story loosely based on a well-known fairy tale. It is a participatory form of theatre, in which the audience is expected to sing along with certain parts of the music and shout out phrases to the performers). Aladdin And His Winter Wishes a singing, swinging and soaring adventure that features family-friendly magic, with a comedic twist, dancing (with "So You Think You Can Dance" alumni), a live pony and contemporary music including “Jai Ho” (from Slumdog Millionaire), “Treasure”, “I’m Too Sexy”, “You Don’t Know Me”, “Break My Stride”, “Makes You Beautiful”, “”Billionaire”, Call Me Maybe”, “Walking On Sunshine” and many more.  Nicely filmed, one or two blackouts, but nothing too bad. (Also see  “A Snow White Christmas” from my main list, last year’s first annual “panto” show).   A

Follies
11/16/17 ~ London -  Imelda Staunton (Sally), Janie Dee (Phyllis), Philip Quast (Ben), Peter Forbes (Buddy), Tracie Bennett (Carlotta Campion), Di Botcher (Hattie Walker), Dawn Hope (Stella Deems), Geraldine Fitzgerald (Solange Lafitte), Josephine Barstow (Heidi Schiller), Norma Attallah (Emily Whitman), Billy Boyle (Theodore Whitman), Gary Raymond (Dimitri Weismann), Bruce Graham (Roscoe), Alex Young (Young Sally), Zizi Strallen (Young Phyllis), Adam Rhys-Charles (Young Ben), Fred Haig (Young Buddy).  London’s National Theatre production, broadcast live to cinemas around the world. The National Theatre revival is the first fully staged major London production of Follies to present the original Broadway version of the show. Sondheim and Goldman revised large parts of the show’s script and score for its 1987 London premiere, toning down the underlying bleakness of the Broadway original, and offering a more hopeful finale for its central characters. Director Dominic Cooke revisited early drafts of Goldman’s script, restoring original dialogue and moments that have not been seen in the production since its 1971 Broadway run.  This is an incredible production, easily the best I have ever seen.   A

TOM DOWD 1 DVD THE LANGUAGE OF MUSIC One of the most involving films at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. Mark Moormann introduced the great hidden force of rock’s classic age.” - -Keith Turan, Los Angeles Times  - Tom Dowd the Language of Music is a documentary profiling the life and work of music producer/recording engineer Tom Dowd. Historical footage, vintage photographs and interviews with a "who's who" list of musical giants from the worlds of jazz, soul and classic rock provide insight into the life of Dowd, whose creative spirit and passion for innovative technology helped shape the course of modern music. - A long-time engineer and producer for Atlantic Records, Dowd was responsible for some of the most important R&B, rock, and jazz records ever made. In his own words, Dowd relates how he went from working on the Manhattan Project as rising physicist, while still high school age, to recording some of the greatest music ever made over the last half of the 20th century. His technical genius opened the door to modern music and made the studio a crucial element in the formula of musical artistry -- It was a 2005 Grammy Award nominee.

DONALD TRUMP 1 DVD WHAT’S THE DEAL 1991 DOCUMENTARY This documentary saw two back-to-back screenings and was never again shown or broadcast.  After the screenings on July 3rd, 1991 (the same day that Donald announced his engagement to Marla Maples) Trump threatened to sue the filmmaker, Leonard Stern. There are lot’s of revelations here: Donald working with the mob in Atlantic City, intimidating tenants, hiring illegal immigrant labor, verbally assaulting his family and underlings, breaking promises to the city of New York, trying to move a Florida airport because jets flew directly over his home... the list goes on and on. But most upsetting to Trump was the film's revelation that he hadn't made as much money as he said he had. Perhaps most interesting from a political point of view, the filmmakers revealed Trump to be the opposite of a small-government conservative. He got his start with his father's money and political connections, and he made money the same way his father did: on the backs of taxpayers... The producers were among the first to show that his financial empire was built on braggadocio... as recent reports show it to be to this day. The revelations about Donald never seemed to end. There was so much for the filmmakers to learn about Trump --- his exaggerations, distortions, near-criminal behavior and, most of all, his deepening financial disaster --- that the documentary was three years in the making.   A

DISASTER! 2/20/16 Broadway. Roger Bart, Adam Pascal, Faith Prince, Rachel York, Kerry Butler, Kevin Chamberlin, Seth Rudetsky, Jennifer Simard, Max Crumm, Baylee Littrell. “Disaster! parodies and pays comedic tribute to the genre of 1970s disaster films. In this musical, a group of New Yorkers attends the opening of a floating casino and discothèque that quickly succumbs to multiple disasters. These calamities correlate with plots of various disaster films of the 1970s such as earthquakes or killer bee incidents echoing situations from the films Earthquake and The Swarm respectively. Additionally, Disaster! keeps with a 1970s theme by being a Jukebox musical, using popular songs of the decade as musical numbers”. Songs include “Hot Stuff”, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)”, “Knock On Wood”, “Don’t Cry Out Loud”, “I Am Woman”, “25 or 6 To 4”, “Still The One”, “I Will Survive”, “A Fifth Of Beethoven”, “Muskrat Love”, “You’re My Best Friend”, “When Will I Be Loved”, “Three Times A Lady”, “Theme From Mahogany”, “Never Can Say Goodbye”, “Nadia’s Theme”, “Mockingbird”, Knock Three Times”, “Hooked On A Feeling”, “Ben”, “Reunited”, and others.  The first minute of the show is in blackout, otherwise it’s beautifully filmed with a High Definition camcorder.
