MERV GRIFFIN SHOW 1 DVD 8/8/65. Merv’s guests are Carol Channing, President Kennedy’s secretary Evelyn Lincoln, and George Frasier. This episode was recorded a few days before Carol’s last appearance in Hello Dolly on Broadway. She was headed off to San Diego to start the national tour. Merv’s show was taped at the Little Theatre (now The Helen Hayes Theatre) which was right next door to the St. James Theatre where Dolly was playing. They put a camera out on 44th Street, and we see Carol walk from the St. James to the Little Theatre. (She initially boards a cart, loaded with luggage, but gets off of it for some reason and walks instead). Carol and Merv sing "Bye Bye Baby". In black and white. 1 hour. Joan says she convinced Dorothy not to fly due to a cold), John Wayne ("Special Gold Medal Winner"), Peggy Wood (who accepts "The Gold Medal Winner" award for "The Sound Of Music"), Robert Vaughn ("Most Popular Male Star"), Chris Connelly and Patricia Morrow ("Most Promising New Star", Male and Female), other guests include the comedy duo of Marty Allen and Steve Rossi. This is less like an award show, and more like a regular episode of The Merv Griffin Show. The guests sit on the panel and are interviewed after Merv introduces them and gives them their awards. In addition to the usual 1970’s talk-show banter, the show also features the first clips of Mame to be aired, and Lucy herself had not seen them before, so she was very excited. Full show which originally ran for 90 minutes, but the commercials have been edited out. Some generational loss. B+

MERV GRIFFIN SHOW 1 DVD Totie Fields Memorial Episode 8/78 NBC-TV. Appearing more than 125 time on his show, Merv dedicates this memorial show to one of his favorite guests, Totie Fields, shortly after her death. This is mostly a rebroadcast of an episode that featured Totie shortly after her surgery in October of 1977, to amputate her leg due to complications from diabetes and her first television appearance with a prosthetic leg. She has lost some of her weight, but is as funny as ever. Also appearing on the episode are the doctors that saved her life. Sadly, shortly after this episode aired, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she ultimately died of a heart attack on August 2, 1978. Complete with original commercials. Also includes some brief news coverage of the announcement of her death. About 90 minutes long. A

Leonard, Dom DeLuise, Steve Martin, Ronald Regan, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Robert Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Burt Reynolds, Orson Wells, Jack Benny, George Burns, Carol Burnett, Michael Landon, John Wayne, Hermione Gingold, Arthur Treacher and Orson Wells (who died a few hours after his interview).
